Is Brain Work For Dogs Just A Bunch Of Hype?
And you're absolutely right to ask that question.
If we hadn't seen our dogs change their behaviors with our own eyes, we never would have believed it.
This is what we learned:
Dogs Prefer Their Treats In The HI.Q. Interactive Puzzle Dog Toy.
Sure dogs will take their treats any way they can get them. They'll charm, beg, and even steal yummy morsels.
But in using the HI.Q. we found the opposite to be true.
Huskies are known to be diabolically intelligent. I, a puny human am not. Silly me left the HI.Q. treats on my desk in the reach of huskies who will clear my counters of food in a heartbeat if left unattended.
These dogs know and love the wheat-free natural treats. If I call "TREAT!", they come running. They scarf HI.Q. natural treats down enthusiastically.
But they didn't, and they normally would, steal the treats off my desk when I wasn't looking.

To answer this question we must look at their reaction to the EL and Orb HI.Q. treat dispensers.
I have a special shelf for the HI.Q. dog toys. I take one off the shelf and they magically know within seconds. I fill the dispensers with the treats, hand one to each dog, and they carry them off to various parts of the house to begin rolling and tossing it around.
The most important point here is the dogs are looking at the treat dispensers, not the treats.
The treat dispensers are the preferred medium to getting these treats. Dogs enjoy using their minds.
I made my dogs happiest by encouraging them to actually USE their brains!

Being the perverse person I am, I tried the Orb first. You're supposed to give your dog the "pipe" shaped EL toy to begin. But like I said, I'm a bit perverse.
Earlier I mentioned the huskies, they went nuts over the Orb and had eaten the treats out of it within 10 minutes. Our two less diabolical bigger dogs pushed the Orb around a few seconds, getting the "easy pickings" to fall out. And then walked away as the huskies pounced on the rest.
Until we tried the EL.
The EL "pipe" shape kept the "good" dogs engaged, and I saw what it a hit it was with all the dogs. The next time I did the treat toys I gave the huskies both shapes. (The different HI.Q. treat dispensers fit into each other).
Ding. Ding. Ding. We have a winner. Well, a couple of them actually. All dogs now play with the El and Orb.
